Chiropractic Earns “Essential” Breakthrough – Celebrates 125 Years

September 15, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

candles number one hundred twenty five isolated on white background

The Chiropractic industry is celebrating 125 years and has earned “essential” recognition and public relations breakthroughs. During the pandemic of 2020, the Department of Homeland Security officially labeled chiropractors as Essential Service Providers, a distinction that has been a long time coming.

Our profession’s patients, practice members, and friends have known this for over 100 years as personal referrals have been driving our industry growth. Federal courts have made judgments in our profession’s favor and more people than ever are lining up to utilize chiropractic care, not just for back pain or neck pain, but as a holistic solution for living a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

As the prehistoric stigmas from chiropractic’s early years completely die off, millions of individuals appreciate the essential nature of chiropractic care as their primary mode of health care. Many companies have embraced chiropractic care by including chiropractic services for reimbursement. Companies like Google, Standard Process, and others even provide on-site chiropractic services for their employees. Professional, Olympic, college, and youth sports teams have chiropractors as key members of their healthcare teams.

It is very common to see chiropractic offices filled with generations of individuals and families. Some people “limp in and leap out” while many others come for weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly Lifestyle Care adjustments to help them stay well and function at a high level.

The Rocky Road to Essential

Getting to the point of Essential has been an interesting journey. Politically, the Chiropractic industry chose not to become a part of the mainstream medical allopathic umbrella which resulted in vicious, unfounded attacks against the profession. The chiropractic industry had to overcome…

  • Political battles to achieve licensure in the early to mid-1900s
  • Arrests for “practicing without a license”
  • Smear campaigns by the AMA and pharmaceutical industry
  • Reimbursement inequalities in the 90s to the present day
  • Political infighting between its holistic and allopathic branches

And we did!

Chiropractic Wins in Federal Court – Obliterating the Lies

In 1987, United States District Judge Susan Getzendanner found the American Medical Association (AMA) and its constituents guilty and in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, on the grounds that they intended to obliterate the chiropractic profession. The AMA took insidious action to contain and eliminate the chiropractic profession with accusations of being unethical and unscientific, and to position the medical agenda at the forefront of healthcare.

During this famous Chester C. A. Wilk et al. v. AMA et al. case, records revealed that medical doctors were encouraged by the AMA to exploit chiropractors and accuse them of wrongdoings. The plan outlined the “containment of the chiropractic profession” that “will result in the decline of chiropractic,” detailed with action steps from denying them from being in hospitals to opposing insurance coverage for their care to even comparing them to dogs.

This epic 11-year battle and chiropractic victory opened the door to new opportunities for holistic healing and drug-free health care led by the chiropractic industry. Now, it is common for chiropractors and medical colleagues to openly refer to each other with chiropractors often taking the lead on the care.

Science is Catching Up to What Patients and Doctors Already Know

Gravity existed long before the apple fell on Isaac Newton’s head! This same concept is true for the healing principles of the human body and its relationship to chiropractic care.

There have been exciting breakthroughs in neuroscience, quantum mechanics, biology, and the immune system that have given the chiropractic profession a boost within the scientific community. The principle of neuroplasticity, the connection between the nerve system and immune system, the understanding of arthritic changes as they relate to poor posture, and many other findings have helped give confidence to the public and change their reasons for consulting doctors of chiropractic.

Essential Innervation, Essential Chiropractic

It is now well documented scientifically that healthy nerve supply is essential for a healthy life. This is true for babies, toddlers, kids, teens, college students, pregnant moms, working people, fitness buffs, parents, senior citizens, and everyone else with a spine and nervous system, regardless of their age.

Opportunities Abound in Chiropractic

Opportunities abound with 68,000 chiropractors compared to 1.1 million medical doctors in the United States alone. Chiropractors are graduating at a rate less than the world needs to replenish those chiropractors that have retired or passed away.

Outside of the US, the need is even more dramatic. With only 12 chiropractic schools in the entirety of Europe, many countries do not have a school at all. As an example, the European Union has 700 million people and less than 5,000 chiropractors. The demand is growing and it needs to be filled.

The Largest and Safest Drugless, Non-Surgical Health and Healing Profession

The effectiveness of chiropractic care is exciting and it is also less expensive than allopathic, surgical based protocols. It is also much safer as exemplified by malpractice costs that chiropractors versus other practitioners have to pay to insurance carriers! Like all other medical professionals, chiropractors are required to have comprehensive insurance coverage that prevents them from absorbing liability.

The average cost of medical malpractice insurance is $7,500 annually; for medical personnel, between $4,000 and 12,000 a year. Surgeons pay between $30,000 and $50,000 a year.9 With high levels of risk comes higher premiums on policies.

Chiropractors, on the other hand, pay a median premium of about $40 per month, or $500 per year, for a business owner’s policy that protects chiropractors against patient injuries, property damage, and damage to their business property. Non-business owners pay as little as $370 per year.8 With low levels of risk comes lower premiums on policies, and is based on the overall amount of claims against the profession. This is especially important for the public to understand, that chiropractic care is not only effective but significantly safer.

What Everybody Ought To Know About Chiropractic

Chiropractic is modern, chic, and copacetic. It’s a non-invasive, drugless, and non-surgical, very hip way to take control over your own health. You will come to understand and know the power of the chiropractic adjustment and care. When should you start getting checked by a chiropractor?

At birth. Here’s why.

When babies come through the birth canal, there are about 40 pounds of pressure being exuded onto that baby’s neck during delivery. It takes 60 pounds of pressure to completely decapitate a newborn. In nearly 100% of SIDS cases, the infant dies of a torqued atlas. The atlas is the highest bone in the vertebral column and the one that supports the head. When the atlas is out of alignment, it can compress the brain stem which is where the autonomic function is housed.

Not only are chiropractic adjustments essential for babies to grow properly through the lifecycle stages, but it’s also one of the most powerful epigenetic lifestyle activities that has the power to eliminate roadblocks to the well-being of the body. This is our goal with the generational care and lifestyle care that we provide for the entire family.

Don’t wait for a crisis to force you to act and come in for a chiropractic check-up. Make an appointment for yourself and your family. Keep yourself aligned and balanced as a lifestyle. You will appreciate the care and find it, dare we say, “essential”.

Prenatal Chiropractic Care

December 4, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Pregnancy is a time of constant and exciting change in a woman’s physiology and overall life as her body prepares for the athletic event of birth. It is important for expecting moms to assemble a birth team to help guide them through these changes and optimize their experience.

In addition to choosing their birth provider, doula, lactation consultant, and birth preparation classes, many women are realizing the importance of prenatal chiropractic care. Prenatal chiropractic care addresses the neuro-biomechanics of your pregnancy, which is essential for your body to be able to organically adapt to the physical and functional changes during every stage of this beautiful and natural process.

What does this mean for you?

Chiropractic checkups and adjustments, when necessary, can…

  • Balance the body and soft tissues of the pelvis, preparing your pelvis for an easier birth.
  • Align your pelvis to ensure that it is moving properly.
  • Reduce torsion and tension on the uterus and its supporting ligaments.
  • Allow for the pelvis to open wider during birth.
  • Ensure optimum nerve function.

Your nervous system controls the function of every cell in your body, including your uterus and pelvic muscles – the main muscles of labor.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy can also benefit your baby. The nervous system is the first system that forms in your baby during the 3rd week after conception. Since your nervous system communicates with your baby’s nervous system, proper function can contribute to better development. Balancing your pelvis also allows your baby the chance to have the most room to develop without physical restrictions to the growth of their cranium, spine and other skeletal structures. Also, this can help the baby move into the best possible birth position when it is their time to arrive.

All of these factors can contribute to a more natural birth as well as a significant decrease in dystocia and birth trauma caused by interventions.

Chiropractic care can help make your pregnancy and birth experience healthier and more enjoyable while helping to minimize the risk. No wonder millions of women include chiropractors as a vital member of their birth team.

How Many Two Weeks is Okay?

December 4, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Research by Dr. Videman out of Helsinki, Finland found that even minor traumas to the spine can cause scar tissue formation within two weeks. How many two weeks is okay with you?

Babies and Children

The birth process can be very traumatic to a newborn’s spine and cause pressure on the nerves that affect breathing, digestion, heart rate as well as the muscles and ligaments of the neck. Because additional research has found that nerve compression can exist without pain, this spinal trauma can be asymptomatic for decades. That is a lot of two weeks! How many two weeks is acceptable for you? How about your children?

If you have ever watched a child learning to walk, how many times a day do you think they fall on their bottom? This repetitive bouncing on their bum can cause their spine to become misaligned, creating subluxations that put pressure on the nerves, which can affect their growth and development and lie dormant for decades. This is also a lot of two weeks especially if they live to be 80, 90, or 100 years old. How do you think this will affect their quality of life as they age?

As the famous poet William Wordsworth said, “As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.” This is absolutely true for the spine. Both major and minor traumas that accumulate over time will affect the way your child’s spine grows.

Seriously, how many two weeks is acceptable for your children? Even more important than the structure of the spine, which is really important, is the impact that these traumas have on the function of the nervous system.

Nerve Pressure and Organ Function

Research shows that the weight of a dime—not a lot of pressure—can reduce transmission. Stretching a nerve as little as six degrees can reduce nerve function up to 70 percent according to Journal of Spine and Joint Surgery.

These traumas that affect the structure also affect the function because of the relationship between the spine and nervous system.

Your nervous system controls and coordinates the function of every cell, tissue, and organ of your body. This includes your sinuses, heart, lungs, liver, kidney, stomach, intestine, and every other organ as well as your arms, legs, hormonal balance, and literally every function that is both conscious and unconscious that your body performs.

Symptoms

As the two weeks accumulate from these traumas, both the function of the spine and the nervous system are compromised. These compromises can be disguised as a myriad of symptoms ranging from allergies, digestive disturbances, and attention deficits to headaches, neck pain, or backaches.

Unfortunately, many of these traumas lie asymptomatic for decades of two weeks until the body can no longer adapt and breaks down with more severe health problems, pain, and even contributions to sickness and disease. Dr. Henry Windsor conducted research that found a nearly 100% correlation between the compromised nerve connections in an injured spine and diseases of the internal organs. (The Windsor Autopsies, The Medical Times)

More than 15 million people each year become diagnosed with osteoarthritis, a condition that results from decades of two weeks that influence the joints of the body.

Since deterioration can occur within 2 weeks, many individuals and families make weekly and bi-weekly adjustments a central piece of their healthy lifestyle. Lifestyle Care keeps your spine in balance with no pressure on the nervous system so your body can function at higher levels. Don’t wait until you “feel” it. You may have waited lots of two weeks too long.

Preparing for a Healthy Pregnancy

December 4, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Give Your Baby a Healthy Start

Planning a family is an exciting time for any couple. There are books to read, videos to watch and doting relatives all too willing to share their stories. With the possibility that your baby could live to be 80, 90, 100 years and beyond, soon-to-be parents need to understand their choices and how those choices will affect the baby for his or her lifetime.

The best thing you can do for your baby is to give him or her a good head start in life by having a healthy pregnancy. But did you know that having a healthy pregnancy can actually begin before conception? Healthy lifestyle habits prior to conception will better your chances of providing the best developmental environment for your child while they are in the womb.

Risky behaviors should be avoided, such as using drugs, over-indulging in alcohol, and exposure to tobacco products. Just as important as the list of “what not to do when planning a baby” is the list of “things to start doing.” This includes proper nutrition, prenatal vitamins, exercise, and stress reduction.

Proper Nutrition is Vital

Proper nutrition is vitally important to the health of your baby. The food you eat becomes the building blocks your baby’s Innate Intelligence will use to develop their eyes, ears, lungs, heart, muscles, skin and brain. There are many ways to determine which foods are most beneficial and why, but to keep things simple, follow this guideline: If it grows, eat it. If it comes in a package with an ingredient list of more than 5-6 items, choose something else. Foods that have been processed the least usually offer more nutrients, are more readily digested, and are healthier than those foods that are highly processed and contain chemicals.
In addition to eating healthy, prenatal vitamins can ensure that moms receive adequate amounts of Vitamins A, B-1, B-2, Niacin, B-6, B-12, C, D, and E, as well as Folic Acid, Calcium, Iron, and usually Zinc. Prenatal vitamins should be considered 6 weeks before conception. Choose vitamins from a trusted source that don’t include fillers and chemicals. Check the ingredient list to see if your vitamins were derived from a whole food source, or if they were engineered in a chemical factory. Remember, what you put in your body directly affects your unborn child.

Get Your ESS in Shape

Exercise is beneficial to both Mom and baby. Studies show that a mom who exercises through the duration of her pregnancy may experience little to no morning sickness, nausea, back pain, swelling, and other irritations sometimes seen in pregnancy. All 3 components of The 100 Year Lifestyle Workout should be a part of your fitness plan. So wherever you are on your journey toward motherhood, the time has come to Get Your ESS in Shape: Endurance, Strength and Structure (your spine and nervous system).

Moms should take all steps necessary to lessen stress before and during pregnancy. Stress takes a toll on the mother’s body and can adversely affect her ability to adapt. Chiropractic adjustments relieve the effects of stress on the nervous system, allowing the body to function and adapt at higher levels.

The lifestyle choices you make now will have an effect on your baby from the moment of conception until their very last breath 80, 90, and maybe even 100 years down the road. Take the steps necessary to start enjoying a healthy active life while providing your baby the foundations for theirs.

Nursing, Nutrition, and Nerve Supply

November 27, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Nursing, nutrition and nerve supply are essential for healthy babies and children. Without these building blocks, your child’s health can be compromised and affect them for the rest of their life. With them, your infants and children will have the ability to grow and develop in a healthy way, adapt to their environment and express their full potential for a lifetime.

Nursing:

Nursing provides newborn babies and infants the nourishment they need to grow. Breast milk has the perfect combination of proteins, fats, vitamins, and carbohydrates. Leukocytes, also present in breast milk, are living cells that help build your baby’s immunity and fight infection. Enzymes and hormones that are present in breast milk are ideal for your baby’s development. If breast feeding is or was not an option for your family, there are some high-quality natural alternatives available that can be researched online.

Nutrition:

As babies and toddlers move to solid foods, smart choices that provide good nutrition will continue to fuel their growth and development. Lean sources of protein found in turkey and fish along with vegetables and fruit provide a rainbow of colorful nutrients that lead to a strong immune system, healthy bones, and normal development. Getting kids accustomed to healthy food as a way of life when they are young will develop their taste and the healthy habits that carry them into their teenage years and adulthood. Laying a solid nutritional foundation when they are young is essential.

Nerve Supply:

A healthy foundation is also important as it relates to their structure, spine, and nerve system. Healthy nerve supply is the most important and most neglected element of a child’s foundation for optimum health. The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of every cell, tissue, and organ of the body and adapts your child to their environment. The same is true for you.

The nerve system regulates the digestion and assimilation of nutrients, while also working to eliminate waste and toxins from your body. Your nerve system coordinates muscle activity and balance, and regulates your heart and breathing. With over 45 miles of nerves relaying over 3 million messages every second between your brain and every cell in your body, the health of your nerve system must be your top priority.

Injuries to the spine and nerve system called vertebral subluxations can occur during the birth process, while learning to walk, tumbling and falling, or sitting too much in front of a video game. Physical, chemical, or environmental stresses to the body—whether they appear dramatic or seemingly insignificant—can also take their toll and lead to problems. These subluxations can slow development, weaken immune systems, and cause behavioral challenges, or they can lie dormant for decades and lead to problems down the road. Vertebral subluxations are easily detected through a chiropractic examination.

Nursing, nutrition and nerve Supply are all very important. If you are about to begin nursing a newborn or wean your baby, this article is great timing. If you have already done that and are raising your children, then this is also good timing. Either way, now is the time to take care of your child’s spine and nerve system so they can optimize their health for a lifetime.

Pregnancy, Posture & Fitness

November 19, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Every pregnant woman wants to bring a healthy and vibrant child into this world. Making healthy choices during pregnancy is a critical component to handling the physical, mental, and emotional demands of pregnancy while ensuring a safe birth and long, vitalistic life for both you and your baby.

Women’s bodies were innately designed to give birth. During pregnancy, the hormone Relaxin is produced to relax the muscles, ligaments and tendons to accommodate for the growing baby. As a woman approaches the end of the first trimester, increased weight in the belly creates a pelvic tilt forward creating a more exaggerated curve in the lumbar spine. Oxytocin, another hormone, helps create effective contractions while simultaneously acting as the body’s natural pain reliever and preventing bleeding after labor. These changes create more space, protection, and stability for the growing baby.

A fitness regimen throughout the pregnancy and post-partum period supports the desire for an uncomplicated pregnancy and birth. Unfortunately, recent research shows that only 1 out of every 6 pregnant women exercise a light to moderate intensity most days of the week (Fieril).

As a mother’s weight increases, her center of gravity shifts outward and postural changes such as instability in the spine and pelvis occur (Ohm). Some of the instability in the spine and pelvis comes from a weakened pelvic floor and core thus creating less intra-abdominal pressure.

Fortunately, poor posture has been perceived as being improved through fitness and chiropractic care during pregnancy (Fieril). One study revealed that urinary incontinence as a result of weakened pelvic floor is a common condition in pregnancy and in the post-partum period. Chiropractic care has been shown to effectively improve the muscular tone and restoration of the articular function twice as much as no care at all (Roy).

Staying active while pregnant has been reported and described by women as “enjoying using their muscles during exercise” which leads to a “psychological boost”. Chiropractic care at the core of a healthy lifestyle, in conjunction with physical fitness during pregnancy, helps mom achieve optimal health and peak performance so that her body can better adapt to the demands of the birth process. A healthy nervous system ensures a healthier growing baby during pregnancy, a safer pregnancy for mom, and full life expression for both today and throughout a lifetime.

Pregnancy is an empowering and natural experience that should be looked upon as something other than a disorder to be monitored. Do you have questions on where to start for your fitness routine during pregnancy? Ask your 100 Year Lifestyle chiropractor today to learn how to keep your spine and nervous system healthy throughout pregnancy. Lifestyle chiropractic care along with physical activity during pregnancy prepares mom for the endurance, strength, and structure needed during labor and birth.

Take charge of your body and the decisions made prenatal, perinatal, and post-partum to support you and your newborn’s 100 Year Lifestyle.
