Nimmo — Receptor Tonus Technique
Developed by Raymond Nimmo in the 1930’s, this non-force, soft tissue chiropractic technique seeks to correct spinal misalignments by addressing muscular "knots" called trigger points.
Trigger points are persistent, pain-producing areas of focal tightness in muscles that have, on a microscopic level, become damaged in the fibers through events such as muscular overload, direct trauma, poor posture, or emotional stress.
Because of the muscular damage, circulation in the "knotted" areas is very poor, and nerve irritating waste products accumulate. Additionally, the amassed pain producing chemicals in the trigger points, can often, through the nervous system, refer pain in very characteristic patterns — further complicating the situation.
With the Receptor Tonus Technique, a trigger point is effectively addressed by gently applying manual pressure to the muscular "knot" for several seconds. By doing this, a fresh circulation of blood is brought into the area, acting to "flush" out the toxic waste buildup and encourage muscular healing. This, in turn, reduces the muscle’s overall tightness and its associated misaligning "pull" on the vertebrae.
